Missions Warning
The Messages and the Lessons
17 Feb 2007
Most pastors choose friends to preach their Mission Conference. This is good if that person has a missionary heart. What qualifies a man to preach a conference? My opinion only:
1– How many conferences has he preached? How often, if he does?
2– How successful is he in his own mission program?
I would be careful of asking a man to preach in my conference if he pastored a church that did not have a heart for missions. How can you tell if it does?
One- Is his church a “sending” church? Are they sending out missionaries?
Two- Is his missions offerings at least 40% of what his regular (tithes) offerings
are? It would be better if it were 50% or more.
Note:
There is lots of missions money in the pockets of Gods people, and it will remain there if you don't qualify your speakers. I know this is so because over 90% of the churches I speak in double their missions commitments over the previous year. Lots of money, but few are giving very much. Why? They don’t understand the commandment. They are not convinced of the need. But, lets get the job done just in case you don't have that kind of speaker. I believe every pastor should believe that the group of Gods people that he pastors will do right if taught to do so. If you do not believe that missions giving helps all the giving in your church then you need to throw this in the trash can, or get some lessons in faith before you try to teach and preach lessons on faith.
Missions Month in your church might go like this:
The Lesson:
Put all adults and teens together for four lessons on missions. Why is it usually better to put them together? This gives you the opportunity to show the church how important missions is and gives you the opportunity to use the best missions speaker you have in the church.
The Message:
Preach at least two messages each week on faith. I believe that it may be wise not to emphasis giving on Sunday morning if you have a lot of visitors. You can however preach some messages on faith, and base them on God blesses those that trust him. Heb 11 is a good place to get these messages.
A letter should go out at least 6 weeks before the conference explaining the program in great
detail. Include a commitment card with a full explanation of it.
Note:
1- Missions lessons should start out with a full explanation of missions.
2– The next lesson should deal with faith. Use such scripture as 2 Cor 8:1-6
3– The third lesson should deal with faith also. Ask questions in the lesson of how faith promise
is seen in the stories of the two widow woman in first and second kings.
4– the fourth lesson should deal with how God provides the need. Important.
Use “5 ways God provides your faith promise.
